The emergency stop signal (ESS) is a function to alert the following vehicle to the danger by rapidly flashing the hazard light when the driver brakes suddenly while driving at high speed (50 ko/h or more).

Hazard flashes at 85 counts/minute, while ESS flashes at about 220 counts/minute.
